The padlock doesn't denote that the site is secure, it means the connection between you and the site is encrypted and it therefore prevents unwanted reading of, or tampering with, the actual data passed from one end of the connection to the other.
A "standard" connection can be read by any machine in the chain between you and the destination site - what's commonly known as an "MITM" (Man In The Middle) attack. See ]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-in-the-middle_attack] if you're suffering from insomnia and/or just google "browser padlock".
