you use 'an' instead of 'a' if the word you are describing starts with a vowel.

ie, an apple, an igloo, an umbrella and an orange. This bit is new to me, but it really makes sense...

The rule is that you use a before words that start with a consonant sound and an before words that start with a vowel sound.

Example:

A helicopter

An hour

That is my English lesson for the day

Your home work for today is to use 'a' and 'an' in your postings as much as you can for the rest of the evening.
