I would have thought that as you are selling the items they would count as stock, regardless of if you use them or not. I guess the tax man could claim that you had a personal gain from using them, but as above if you had items that you brought for personal use that you could prove then the sold items should be 100% tax deductable.

I sure do! Angel

Otherwise I am going to struggle to explain how I can afford to live in a luxury apartment and drive a 12 plate SLK, aren't I. Haha!

Have HMRC actually busted anybody on AW yet? For a knicker duality?
Do they patrol the internet looking at AW providers. Sounds like a long winded process to me.
As profiles pop up and close down in a flash.

Seriously what are the chances of a tax investigation, has it happened to anybody here?

As a punter I know its not my place but this is interesteing.

Sometimes people just amaze me...

YES - HMRC have actually busted webcam providers and escorts for TAX EVASION. Exactly the same way that they bust plumbers, electricians and other trades. Running a business or a trade is income - therefore you pay tax.

You can't use the immoral issue - cast your mind back to the Miss Whiplash case!

Do they especially target the Adult Industry - who knows; but they do go on information received from other sources - YES . Are they totally stupid? - NO.

I personally know of 2 escorts and 3 webcam ladies who have been investigated. There was also a recent newspaper article re Kirsty Summers who was working on Sport XXX and Bang Babes.

As an authorised HMRC agent I get emails weekly of cases that the HMRC has won re tax evasion. One of the roles of HMRC (whether people agree or not is of no concern) is too collect the right amount of income tax from the public. People who deliberately avoid paying tax should face the appropriate penalties.

No-one likes paying income tax, but no-one likes dieing either... unfortunately they are two things guaranteed in life. You can live a healthy life style and you can plan your business affairs accordingly to reduce tax - this is called TAX AVOIDANCE and is perfectly legal.

If you have a social media presence where you advertise your services, or you post on various adult sites then your chances of being detected (if you are not legit with HMRC) go up radically.

If you then blatantly advertise the fact that you don't pay any taxes - then I have no comment to that one. I'm sure you can guess the answer?

Sometimes you may just be lucky and get away with it; sometimes you may get a few years "free". What is the worst that can happen - do not pass go, do not collect your £200, but you do get a criminal record (unfortunately they don't come framed so they aren't even useful!).

Am I being quite harsh - NO I don't think so; I just state facts. Yes I know lots of people in this industry do not pay tax - is that of any concern to me - NO. I sort my affairs and my clients affairs out to reduce the tax bills through tax planning, not tax evasion.

Do I look over my shoulder in worry? - NO. Do I sleep soundly at night - YES.

Aren't Monday mornings lovely..............Tongue

I can imagine many get found out through someone else knowing what they do and reporting them. Another one that applies to anyone self-employed is going bankrupt...any situation that involves someone looking into a person's financial affairs. I guess though that HMRC would need to write to AW for confirmation of the person's identity and income. One address is in Belize and the other Gibraltar, they won't be able to force a reply and what are the odds of one being given voluntarily?

HMRC has other sources of information and doesn't have to go direct to AW.

It could be a pissed off punter or an upset neighbour... One of the escort cases I know who got busted was done through an incall booking on AW (yes you read it correctly); two guys turned up at her front door, one was a copper and the other was an investigations officer from HMRC.

Yes they actually made an AW booking!

Start sticking your face picture and personal details around the net and it makes the taxman's life so much easier!

Yes, I've heard of HMRC doing things like that. The banks certainly look at how accounts are managed too.

I was thinking of Escorts rather than Webcam providers. Cam providers are participating in a digital form of business so yes I concur.

I had a friend who was a illustrator, and he did get checked a few years ago. And he ran his business in a very old school, cash orientated, paper manner. He was ok after it was over, they didn't give him too much of a problem. So yes it does happen so it's not a lie. It is the likelihood of it happening which is my question?

I'm not suggesting that people should not pay tax, I'm just trying to build a picture of this scare mongering that can come from 'some' accountants. Maybe they over egg it a little, for commercial purposes. My own acountant can do this quite a lot sending circulars about tax investigations.
I do try and do things properlly myself. I don't like having to contribute to nukes, but we all have to do it.

Like you say it is about being on the radar. It might start of as a bit off a hobby or a bit of fun, and it might not last very long. People could forget sometimes that it is a business. Or you might end up being a Miss Wiplash, famous and very established and have a reputation etc. And run it like a business, like a plumber would.

I think it's easier for cam providers to maintain their anonymity than escorts...
